Back from Haiti after earthquake

Well this trip turned out to be extraordinarily non ordinary. So much to post- seems like this video of Dr. Mike discovering an MRE might offer a fun place to start...

Next trip around the corner

Tickets are purchased and supplies are being gathered for the trip at the end of January. We are going to take a day to see some of the sites of Haiti. Very excited for that! Contact us if you are interested in donating some of the supplies for this trip! Jeff and Rachel

Photos by Keith

One of the members that went with us on the November trip took some wonderful pictures while down there. His name is Keith Baggett and he has a great talent for photography and the credit for the photos at this link is exclusively Keiths.

We return in three weeks

Rachel and I are just three weeks away from making our second trip back to Haiti. Our travel arrangements are being finalized and we've started buying up vitamins when we see them on sale. We are getting very excited to go back and serve this wonderful group of people. While I am a long way from having learned Creole- I have tried to spend a little time each day getting familiar with the language, the people and the country. I hope to devote a little computer time each day while there to keep this blog updated for you loyal readers.

Reunion Day

Today is reunion day for the March 09 HEF crew. A few didn't make the picture- but it's still a good looking crew, isn't it?
So if Francisco yells out Creole in his sleep and there is no one around to understand it... does it really happen?

24 March 2009

He is laughing because he knows we'll never get to see a sign like this in an American hospital!
Ok- ok I will explain... Look over the lads right shoulder. See the broken concrete and the 'water' in the drainage ditch? This is in one of the courtyards of the hospital and the sign "Tanpri, pa pipi la" is on that post next to the water. The sign says, "Please, don't pee here."

Modern day clinic

Sometimes, instead of heading to a village, one of the teams would stay behind at the clinic at the compound and see paitents. And we always brought a few patients back from the village to be attended to that evening. This is a nice clinic and this video gives a brief tour of what it looks like inside.

Rest of the trip to the airport

Here's a link to the rest of the trip to the airport. More of town, neat churches, "organized mayhem" and a nice finish for the MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship).

Somewhere between finding tarantulas and clipping lizards to his ears- the doctor made sure that the spirit of our patients got a boost!

Interpreter going above and beyond--

One of our fine interpreters, named Desire, took the lead and interpreted the pastor's sermon for us. It was a very nice gesture and greatly appreciated!

Not really a road at this point...

Really- can we even call it a road anymore???

Emergency care:

This is the ambulance and emergency room serving the citizens of Hinche.

Commuting to work for the day...

This beats an L.A. commute, doesn't it??? Pretty sure this even tops an Idaho commute! Figure 4-6 Haitians would squeeze in for the ride home after clinic.

Driving through Hince

Here we are working our way through Hinche to the airport on our way out Monday morning. This will give you a good feel of Hinche, Haiti... without the smells or the wind blowing through your hair.

A link to the rest of the trip to the airport is posted above

another round of music in church

Pastor's wife is leading the choir- pastor is settling into the keyboard at the left of the screen.

Look at that, would ya?

Be sure to check out the amazing work that the HEF does.
Here is a link to their website http://www.haitiendowmentfund.org/

Here's a top-notch team doing what they did everyday. They helped 300-400 or more patients everyday. Whether it was trouble seeing, teeth needing pulled, looking at a baby with an ultrasound, general sniffles and sore throats, or just a gentle touch that was needed, these teams of talented people deliver it all!!

Food storage

Food gets stored well off the ground to keep heavy rains and rodents out of it.

Lunch time at school. Both a rarity for many Haitians. Several of these kids were sharing plastic spoons, so we saved our lunch spoons to donate to the cause. The uniforms were so clean and looked very sharp on the students.

Dining and Planning

Finishing up dinner Saturday night and getting our plan together for Sunday. Only half day of clinic after church- pretty sure we saw the same amount of people, though. Just in half the time!

Haitian countryside

Beautiful countryside, isn't it?? At one time it was covered in tropical rain forest. Columbus declared it the "Pearl of the Caribbean"

Leaving clinic for the day

Our work here is done for the day. We had 19 people riding in the Toyota pick-up on the way back to town. The roads were some of the roughest we traveled.

These guys put on a wonderful show during church!

This was home for the week. Very nice and very comfortable quarters for the 29 of us.

Boy and his cart

Should've seen him control the 'bef' while crossing the street. Definitely an art!

Hello My Name is Trouble...

As if the kids weren't cute enough- they go and wear t'shirts like this!
